What is a VCF file?

A VCF file (also called a vCard) is a contact file. One file can hold hundreds of names and numbers. Your phone can read it and add all the contacts at once, so you do not need to save them one by one.

On an Android phone

  1. Download the VCF file. It will usually be in your Downloads folder.
  2. Tap the file. If your phone asks which app to use, choose Contacts.
  3. If asked where to save the contacts, choose your Google account if you want them backed up, or Phone if you want them on this phone only.
  4. Confirm and wait. A big file can take a few minutes.

If tapping the file does not work, open the Contacts app, open the menu, then choose Settings or Manage contacts, then Import, then pick the VCF file. Menu names differ a little between phone brands.

On an iPhone

  1. Download the VCF file, or open it from the message or app it was sent in.
  2. Tap the file to open it. You should see the list of contacts.
  3. Tap Add All Contacts (the wording may be slightly different on your iOS version).
  4. If it asks about duplicates, choose what you prefer, and wait for it to finish.

To keep them safe, make sure iCloud contacts sync is on in your Apple ID settings.

Duplicate contacts

If you already had some of the people saved, your Contacts app may show two entries. Most phones have a Merge or Clean up option in the Contacts app that joins duplicates.
